DISSOLVENZA IN ROSSO

In quale film è accaduto? Indovinate. Helga, Helga. Dove credi di nasconderti? A casa tua, forse?

FADING IN RED

“You know, sometimes what you see – and what you THINK you see – mix up in your memory  like a cocktail,of which you don’t know the flavour or the smell”. (Gabriele Lavia, Deep Red)

Loving a movie.Reinventing it.Recalling the atmospherics and the characters, yet  taking care about shuffling the cards and rewriting the story, assigning different roles and tracing new paths, opening to new possible interpretations. This is what we tried to do with this videoclip,an homage to the most famous of the 70s giallo movies by Dario Argento and,at the same time,a comprehensive view of the locations of the magic city par excellence, setting of many of the movies made by the Roman director:Turin.
The result,is a mini-movie which is not only about Deep Red but, more in general, about the Argento’s cinema of that period;not forgetting the morbid and savage implications which can be found in the works directed by his imitators (Paolo Cavara,Tonino Valerii, Luigi Bazzoni, Antonio Bido… and us,obviously).
A sunny street,a park,a young woman. She vaguely looks like Helga, the medium played by Macha Meril in Deep Red;but her nervous kind of beauty also reminds of the predestined victim at the beginning of another  Argento’s cult classic,The Bird With The Crystal Plumage.
She is vulnerable, unprotected, nothing should happen to her in the light of the daytime….but someone follows her, spies her, studies her moves in a sadistic game.Another woman, enjoying a cigar;they don’t know each other, but her interest for Helga is evident. She films her actions with a cam,in the same way the fetishist killer of The Bird With The Crystal Plumage froze the features of the future prowl with a camera.
Is of her that the young woman should beware?Maybe;or maybe not.Maybe the stalker is only executing the will of someone else,a perverted mind which uses delegates to satisfy its own fancies,in a kind of lethal seductive game, guided from distance, with the chosen victim. Therefore a mercenary, our spy can be;her looks reminds a bit the one of Gianna, the fearless reporter who is resolute in solving the riddle which is the basis to the story narrated in Deep Red.But Gianna was one of the good ones;the treacherous glance of this improvised filmaker gives little doubt about the fact that she is playing in the other team.
Specular characters, more mocking quotations, you are watching Deep Red but this time it’s us who are making the rules…make yourself comfortable, therefore. You still have a lot to see. That mansion with the windows which seem like following the nervous walk of our Helga,do you recognize it?It’s Villa Scott, also famous as “The Screaming Child Mansion”;in the Argento’s movie it kept a terrible secret inside,it was said to be an haunted house but the only ghost which floated through its walls was that of a past which could not stay buried any longer….is it relevant to the narration, this time?Who knows.Maybe also the monster which waits to enter  the scene in our story has a secret as well.Could  the mansion be big enough to give it shelter,as it had already done once?We are not allowed to know. But if you like to believe it’s so,why not?
We are in a square, late afternoon. The first shadows of the evening start to fall.Helga is more and more nervous…she turns around, she still has the feeling of being followed but this time she notices no one.Nevertheless,a cam is unyieldingly continuing its voyeuristic job.The square is familiar to Helga;who knows how many times she crossed it,absent-mindedly.And us as well,in our imagination;those two fountains, the windows on the top of a building….in 1975 a terrible murder was committed, here.A piano player,Marc, witnessed it and he did whatever he could to make way the murder could be arrested. In which movie did this happen?Guess! But there was a bar,in this square:what has become of it?Maybe it closed down,a lot of time has passed….or maybe it has never been there.Argento too, like us,likes to play and to muddle up the audience. But somewhere, the shining blade of a cleaver awaits…Helga,Helga.Where do you think you can hide yourself? At your home, maybe? You’re not safe there neither. An apartment which seems to be suspended in time, with that furniture which is very 70s like….another Helga lived in an apartment which was similar to yours, did you know it?And the cleaver which will shortly bite your flesh is the same one that your unlucky homonym tried to dodge,in vain, in a bloody dance of horror. It was expressly manufactured for the movie,a lot of fans, still nowadays, love to have pictures taken while they are grabbing it or pretending  to fall under its blows.
Is a great honour, for those who love the Argento’s giallo which we care so much about;consider yourself lucky, then. We have to leave you for now,it’s getting late;darkness already fell on the square,we are waited for and the game has lasted enough.Because it was only a game, anyway;don’t take it seriously…ehm, maybe you should, but we don’t want to spoil your evening.A  macabre game was set up,behind the back of the unfortunate young woman,by a group of guys who however will learn it the hard way by the hand of the real murderer. Thanks for staying with us until now;it was very nice for us,get back for a visit whenever you like. The streets of Turin, its garrets, its enchanted gardens still have a lot of things to tell you,to whisper in your ear….
